I cannot deny it, my boyfriend and I got sucked into the new singing reality TV fix that is "The Voice." I have to admit though.. I was completely addicted.
First of all, the show snagged what I think is a fun and talented judging panel (Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Christina Aguilera).
Cee Lo Green became a new favorite of mine when he came out with the song "Fuck You" and then I realized he was from Gnarls Barkley. Watching him on the show is so much fun! He is always sweet and encouraging, just like a giant teddy bear- plus he always has that giant grin!
Next, you've got Blake Shelton, who surprised me with his fun attitude and decent team contestant picks early in the season. He has helped me grow to respect country music just a little bit.
Then there is Adam Levine. Need I say more? I have loved Maroon 5 since I was a freshman in high school (and yes, that was many moons ago..). Plus he is so damn sexy. NBC knew they hooked all females 13-30 years old by snagging him as a judge.
Of course we cannot forget the resident diva, Ms. Aguilera. I think everyone can agree that if anyone is qualified to judge who the next "voice" should be, its her. I've been a fan of Xtina (and all the other forms of her name..) since I was in about 5th grade, so you better believe I was excited to see her doing something with her career again.
Something I loved/hated about the show was that you did not watch all the auditions like you would in "American Idol". As much as I missed seeing the freaks and terrible singers, it was nice just to hear talented people competing.
The season was incredibly short, which I found to be a major downfall. I do acknowledge that it is a summer show and that it was the first season, so I can't be too upset. I am excited to say that the show was been renewed for season two!
I really loved all the duets/group songs that the judges would be part of with their team contestants. It reminded me that the judges are not just critics of upcoming talent, but artists themselves with talents of their own and knowledge of the industry. I think hearing Christina belt it out and Adam croon a soulful ballad helped keep their talents and skills relevant. Plus, its fun to see some superstars perform.
Overall, I think "The Voice" was a fun show full of talented singers and qualified judges. I think this show also focused more on the talent and competition, rather than the heart/emotion and stories behind each singer, and that helps the show appeal to a more general crowd. I think my boyfriend got drawn into the show because it was raw talent and fun, without all the glitter and glitz of other shows like "American Idol".
See this show if: you love singing competitions, you like reality television, you like Christina Aguilera/Cee Lo Green/Adam Levine/Blake Shelton, discovering upcoming talent.
Do NOT see this show if: you hate singing competitions, you are "over" reality television, you think Christina Aguilera is a tranny/annoying.
