I was extremely hesitant to see this movie as it was the fourth in the series. We all know that most movies get exponentially worse as they go further down the series. I must say though, I was very pleasantly surprised by this Pirates film!
My boyfriend and I went to see this as a fun date night earlier this summer. We went all out and got the 3D-IMAX tickets, too. I thought the movie was a lot of fun and actually kind of refreshing and light without the main characters from the past (Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley). In the third movie I found Knightley's character a little annoying and not worth the storyline. In contrast, I loved having more attention spent on Johnny Depp and I thought Penelope Cruz was a great addition.
The movie was a nice mixture of action and story, which is always nice. I think my headline gave it away, but my favorite part of this movie was the MERMAIDS! I was once a little girl, so you can't blame me too much for still having a slight obsession with mermaids. I think the mermaid and the clergy man were a great addition to the storyline and super sweet.
Overall, the movie was worth the money. I would say though, it was not worth the extra couple of dollars to see in 3D-IMAX. I think seeing this movie in good ole 2D would have been sufficient.
See this movie if: you love Johnny Depp, you love the Pirates movie series, you enjoy movies with action and comedy, you think Penelope Cruz is hot, you found Keira Knightley annoying in the latest Pirates movie, you want a fun date night, you have or have not seen the other movies in the series (can stand alone!)
Do NOT see this movie if: you hate pirates, you are not a Johnny Depp fan, you want a serious film with no humor, you hate mermaids, you are soulless.
